Malone's Family Restaurant Opens in Former Bell Brothers Spot

  • 0

Malone’s Family Restaurant has opened at 4320 Old Walkertown Road in the Ogburn Station Shopping Center in the former Bell & Sons Cafeteria location.

The opening has been anticipated since 2012. Malone’s and its owner, Bernetta Oakes, had come under fire for the long delays, which had led to speculation that the city might not recoup close to $500,000 in loans.

The restaurant serves cafeteria-style, just like the well-known Bell & Sons - commonly called Bell Brothers - which occupied that space from 1963 to 2010.

Malone’s menu varies from day to day, but includes a selection of about five entrees, five sides and five desserts each day.

The menu features such homestyle entrees as fried fish, country style steak, fried chicken, chicken livers and gizzards, and baked spaghetti.

Sides include mashed potatoes, macaroni and cheese, turnip greens, pinto beans, corn, cabbage and fried okra.

Salads include coleslaw, potato salad and tossed salad.

Homemade desserts include apple cobbler, sweet potato pie, pound cake and strawberry cake.

Items are available a la carte, or as a meal that includes a meat, two sides, cornbread or roll, and a drink. The meal costs $8.99.

Individual entrees mostly run $4.25 to $4.50.

Desserts run from $1.75 to $2.50.

Malone’s is open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday.
