More About Winston-Salem Journal

The Winston-Salem Journal is a leading multimedia news, information and entertainment source for Winston-Salem, Forsyth County and Northwest North Carolina. It is owned by World Media Enterprises, a subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway.

The Journal published its first edition on April 3, 1897. In its 115-year history, the Journal has been an authoritative news source and a leading editorial voice for the region.

The Journal and its sister paper, the Twin City Sentinel, won the Pulitzer Prize for public service in 1971 for its campaign against a plan to strip mine the land in Northwest N.C. and southwestern Virginia for a mineral used to make aluminum. The company eventually allowed its options to expire.

The Sentinel closed in March 1985, a victim of declining circulation.

JournalNow.com was launched in 1997, which was also the Journal’s 100th anniversary.
