Initial state and federal unemployment claims in North Carolina had a modest increase over the weekend after state Republican legislators approved ending federal benefits by as early as five weeks.

The N.C. Division of Employment Security reported Tuesday there were 1,064 claims Friday, 481 on Saturday, 1,633 on Sunday and 1,942 on Monday.
