There’s no better way to say I love you—whether to a special someone or to yourself—than a delectable dessert. Luckily, with Valentine’s Day right around the corner, the country’s “Best Cupcakes” (as voted by The Daily Meal) happen to be right here in Clemmons.
And since Ava’s Cupcakes opened its doors in November, it seems like everyone can’t seem to get enough of them.
“The local community has been so welcoming to our business and family,” says Michelle Spell, owner of Ava’s Cupcakes. “We are so excited to continue to grow Ava’s in North Carolina.”
Many locals already recognized the bakery; after all, it won Food Network’s “Cupcake Wars.” On the show, Spell’s challenge was to make cupcakes that matched the “I Love Lucy” theme. She opted for an apple pie cupcake to represent Lucy, and a banana guava cupcake to represent Ricky. Since the show aired, those two cupcakes have been their biggest sellers—and continue to be in high demand.
Taste tests are important at her bakery, and Spell prepares everything from scratch using fresh, seasonal ingredients. Because of that, each dessert tastes exciting with every bite.
Not only does the bakery prepare cupcakes, they also serve scones, handpies, cakes, macaroons, and much more. As far as cupcakes go, in addition to the apple pie and banana guava, other favorites among Ava’s fans are chocolate salted caramel, crème brulee, and chocolate cannoli. Furthermore, they offer a selection of gluten-free cupcakes, as well as vegan ones.
For Valentine’s Day, Ava’s Cupcakes will have a full array of heart-shaped and love-themed desserts, from cookies to handpies. Not feeling in the mood this year? Don’t worry; a “Love Stinks” collection of desserts will be available as well. An assortment of cakes that are perfect for the holiday will also be available.
“After the show aired, we had a huge line the next morning at our New Jersey store,” Spell says. “It was then I realized how huge this was for business.”
While the original store in Rockaway, New Jersey, continues to provide mouth-watering desserts, it didn’t take long for Spell and her family to realize they wanted to migrate south. Since their family often traveled over the years to Florida, Winston-Salem quickly became their halfway destination. The Twin City grew on them and, like many who visit the Triad, they fell in love with its charm.
“Once we decided to move from the North, it was a quick decision among the entire family to choose Winston-Salem,” Spell says.
Ava’s Cupcakes was named after Spell’s youngest daughter, but the whole family loves to cook and bake. And while the Clemmons location is their first store in North Carolina, it certainly won’t be their last. Spell already has expansion plans and is scouting out a second location.
And just as sweet as the cupcakes themselves, Spell treats each guest like a friend—or an authentic member of her own family.
“Our guests truly become a part of the family. I’m so honored to work in a profession where we celebrate life and get to share those special moments with our guests,” Spell says. “I’ve had the joy of working with families and making their cakes from engagement parties, all the way to their baby’s gender reveal party and children’s birthdays.”
