In 2020, 1 in 6 Americans was age 65 or older, with the majority expressing a strong desire to age in place in their own residence. For families and caregivers facing the logistical challenges of meeting an older loved one’s needs at home, adult day care centers can provide much-needed respite, therapeutic benefits and valuable opportunities for socialization.
Helping seniors continue living at home
A Winston-Salem fixture for more than 60 years, Senior Services Inc. has provided caring programming and support to help aging seniors continue living at home with dignity, respect and purpose. This fall, the opening of the new state-of-the-art Intergenerational Center for Arts and Wellness (Generations Center) will increase the organization’s ability to provide services even further through new and expanded programs and partnerships. Â
After more than a year under construction on the Senior Services campus, the 62,500-square-foot Generations Center will open its doors this fall to welcome the public with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and open house planned for Nov. 17.
Adult day center
In addition to spaces for multigenerational events and activities the whole family can enjoy, on-site health care services and a cafe, the Generations Center will house the award-winning Elizabeth and Tab Williams Adult Day Center. Recognized in Forsyth County as a leader in the care of people living with frailty, Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia, the new location will allow the day center to serve up to 50% more people and offer more activities and programs.
Nurturing and structured environment
For many participants and their families, the Williams Adult Day Center is the answer to a prayer, providing seniors with the care they need in an enjoyable, structured environment. Caregivers can rest assured their loved ones are receiving the care and attention they need in a safe, nurturing atmosphere, while still being able to return to their own homes at the end of the day.
With a sunny, open floor plan to maximize opportunities for socialization, the Williams Adult Day Center designates specific areas for music, arts and sensory activities to keep participants stimulated and engaged throughout the day. Other features of the new adult day center include an open residential-style kitchen where participants can engage in staff-led cooking activities, a salon, showers and jetted spa-style bathtubs for personal care needs. Breakfast and lunch are provided in a sociable dining room.
Funded through the Creative Connections capital campaign, an effort that stemmed from the Senior Services Aging with Purpose Pilot, the Intergenerational Center for Arts and Wellness intends to function as a community resource for local residents of all ages, particularly underserved local populations. Spearheaded by Senior Services, the Generations Center has been made possible thanks to collaboration and support from two major regional healthcare systems and 19 other nonprofit organizations with the hope of setting a national model for other cities and communities to replicate.
