W. M. Jenkins celebrated the opening of its new playground on October 6 with a ribbon-cutting ceremony featuring students, district leaders and special guests.
Principal Jamey Carter welcomed attendees and thanked the people who made the project possible. The Catawba County Board of Commissioners provided funding, and Hickory City Schools Director of Operations & Maintenance Tony Cox initiated the project and advocated for the new playground.
“A playground is so much more than swings and slides,” Carter said. “It is a place where you can learn to be brave.”
Students helped mark the official opening by testing the new slides, with Carter taking the first slide. Students and adults then joined in the playground fun.
Special guests included Catawba County Manager Mary Furtado, Hickory City Schools Board Chair Amanda McGuire, Superintendent Dr. Jennifer Griffin, and Assistant Superintendents Shelly Black and Angela Simmons.
The school also recognized Matt Schramm and the Miracle Play Systems crew for designing and constructing the playground, as well as Matthew Walters and True Authority Landscaping for spreading mulch and cleaning up the surrounding area.
The new playground will give students a place to explore, build friendships and make memories for years to come.
